Kids Company We have had the pleasure of working with Kids Company for a few years now. Kids Company is a London based charity that provides practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. Kitchen Academy has been running some very successful cookery courses, teaching students to nourish themselves and to also give them the oportunity to have a career in catering. One of our last students went onto Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Foundation.

BBC Good Food Show Kitchen Academy ran a live and interactive show. The show was structured so that it was a fun packed two hours with plenty of exciting recipes, interactive games and facts. The main premise of the show were the recipes which can be done at home. There were tasters and recipes available. Throughout the show there were also children up on stage to perform different tasks including operating the Human Fruit Machine, the Smoothie Bikes and Apple Peeling Machines and also getting involved with the Gastronomic Experiments and Silly Senses.

The Soil Association Using organic produce the Kitchen Academy team set-up a cookery demonstration and workshop area at the Organic Food Festival in Bristol. Visiting children and families learnt how to cook with organic produce and also got to make organic fruit smoothies.

Made in Cumbria Made in Cumbria have been a regular client of Kitchen Academy’s having had cookery workshops and also having Kitchen Academy chefs’ showcase regional produce in their cooking theatres. Past events have included the Taste District Food and Drink Festival, Holker Festival, Lowther Driving Trials and Country Fair and also the Wallington Hall Food & Craft Festival in Northumberland. See what John Anderson, (Senior Food Marketing Officer – Made in Cumbria, Cumbria County Council), has to say about the Kitchen Academy below

I have been using ‘The Kitchen Academy’ regularly since October 2006 at a number of high profile events in the north of England, including Holker Show and Lowther Horse Driving Trials on which the gate numbers have been 25,000 and 60,000 respectively.
The professionalism and work effort needed to undertake these busy events is immense and the team from ‘The Kitchen Academy’ have entertained, and more importantly educated hundreds of children through their cooking workshops.

Children’s Food Festival Kitchen Academy was proud to be part of the first ever Children’s Food Festival. With an estimated 13,000 – 15,000 visitors Kitchen Academy had some great sessions. We ran cookery workshops all day long. Children who came through the workshops got to be chefs for an hour and had a full range of interactive activities, from coming on stage to give the chefs a hand with their demo’s to creating their own chef hats. All the food the children made was taken home along with recipe cards.

FareShare This has been quite an unusual project undertaken by Kitchen Academy. Kitchen Academy chefs have been visiting sheltered accommodations all over the country where Fareshare deliver their surplus foods to. The Chefs’ run a two day program for clients at the accommodation teaching them basic hygiene in the Kitchen, basic nutritional advice, kitchen safety and basic cookery skills. Although this is not a typical area of work for Kitchen Academy it is very rewarding.

Fair Trade Kitchen Academy ran a cookery competition in schools using Fair Trade ingredients. Winning pupils had Kitchen Academy Chefs visit their school to cook their recipe on stage. Fairtrade also use our Smoothie Bikes at their events. The last event that we worked with Fairtrade with was at the Brakes Half Marathon in London. It was a great event and we are more than happy to support such a worthy project.

WOMAD WOMAD has always been a pleasure to work at. Kitchen Academy runs sessions at the Taste the World Stage sponsered by Discovery Foods. Our chefs run workshops throughout the festival for children who are keen to learn about different foods they can cook at home using ingredients from all around the world. In between our sessions world famous musicians come up on stage and cook a dish from their home country. Again we never fail to fill up the workshops.

Kitchen Academy has been a brilliant addition to the Taste the World stage at WOMAD over the last two years. A fantastic team who captivate children’s imagination with their fun and tempting ways of encouraging healthy eating, inviting them to take part in creative cookery sessions, using ingredients and recipes from around the world. They round off their sessions with the ‘Real Live Fruit Machine’ and ‘Smoothie Bicycle’ which offer truly inventive ways for children to take a hand in creating their own delicious mixes.

Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival Kitchen Academy was commissioned to manage a new festival as part of the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival. ‘The Brighton and Hove Children’s Food Festival’ was held in the Royal Pavilion Gardens and was a great success. It was a real opportunity to show people what Kitchen Academy was all about. We ran the Kids Kitchen Academy Workshops, commissioned some local chefs including Momma Cherry. We helped organise other acts including the Utensils Puppet Show and Art Food Faces. Kitchen Academy also provided a Fruit Shy, Apple Peeling Machines, Gastronomic Experiments, the Human Fruit Machine and of course the Kitchen Academy’s Famous Smoothie Bikes.
